As church bells chime in the background, a burly bouncer works the velvet ropes at the church entrance. “No, step aside, please,” he tells two men who—look carefully! as the camera moves in for a tight shot—are holding hands. They are turned away from worship. “I don’t think so,” the thug says to a young black girl, blocking her entrance. A Hispanic man and a person in a wheelchair are also denied entry.

Fade to black. “Jesus didn’t turn away people. Neither do we,” intones a godly narrator in the name of the United Church of Christ. “No matter who you are, or where you are on life’s journey, you are welcome here.”
